Keep it Local… that is how we feel about supporting our farmers, brewers, apiaries, and vendors.  Sourcing locally not only puts money back into our communities and provides our customers with the freshest produce & meats, but it also lowers our carbon footprint by limiting the amount of fossil fuels in shipping/storage. Here are a handful of some of our farms and vendors.

zeldenrustZeldenrust Farm Market is a 4th generation family owned and operated 82 acre farm located in Chicago Heights, IL.  Ruth runs the family farm which includes greenhouses filled with unique lines of bedding plants, patio pots, hanging baskets and vegetable plants. Outside on the farm she has local vegetables growing, which are picked daily for freshness. The farm’s reputation for growing tomatoes is so strong that the family once sold to Campbell’s Soup and Libby’s.  Ruth also specializes in local homegrown honey.  As a local farmer, Ruth is committed to selling the freshest vegetables and tastiest honey to the local residents.

mad heavenly harvestMadeline’s Heavenly Harvest is a growing family apiary with honeybee hives located in local fields, meadows, and pastures of Kankakee County. We utilize man-made chemical free beekeeping practices to keep our bees and customers happy and healthy. We hand craft our own products utilizing honey and beeswax from our hives with various other natural materials. The extremely diverse midwestern flora gives our wildflower honey its wonderfully sweet taste. We harvest our honey at various times throughout the season so our honey varies from almost clear to a dark rich caramel color with no small batch being exactly alike.

Our chicks are hatched at our own hatchery and placed primarily on Amish family farms. The birds are raised with the freedom to go outside into the sunshine and get healthy exercise. They are fed a non-GMO vegetable, drug free diet and are hormone and antibiotic free.

Antibiotic free -our chickens are raised on all vegetable feed that is ground at our feed mill from corn and soybeans. No antibiotics are added. Labels can be confusing – with terms like “free-range” on the label it does not mean that it is antibiotic free. There is no requirement that free-range chickens be antibiotic free.

non-GMO all Vegetable fed – The feed is a mixture of corn, soybeans, minerals, salt and vitamins that is mixed at our own feed mill and there are no animal by products, animal fats or coloring added, never.

At Strauss Farms, we only partner with American family farmers and ranchers who are passionate about the grass they grow, the land they preserve, and the cattle they raise. They are exceptionally skilled at their craft, using all-natural, biological, soil-balancing methods. Our family farmers carefully tend to their cattle and their land, producing authentic heritage-bred, free range, 100% grass finished beef – never administered antibiotics or hormones, as nature intended. This produces sustainably raised, great-tasting, marbled beef. Good for the cattle, the earth, and you.
